  • change of place

Now pleased to announce that I have returned to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as an
    Alumni Studio Fellow
This is following the untimely closure of the 915 Spring Garden studio building, where I had been located the past more than five years.
I will miss its extremely convenient location, high ceilings, enormous windows, and long history (hi hallway-mates Janell and Peter !). I will not miss its pests and terrible insulation.
My new PAFA studio is exactly one floor above my previous one, from 2008-2010, and so looks identical in every way, which is somewhat strange. But it's neat to be around so many students making work again (and to see Scott Noel painting regularly in the foyer of my floor).

  • Mural Arts Program Summer Internship

Getting some extra, outside of my teaching duties, mural-making experience this summer, as a part of the Independence Foundation Summer Internship Program!
It's a great schedule because I get to spend the morning as part of the artist crew, and then Assistant Teach on the same mural (81 panels! and designed by the too cool Kim Beck) in the afternoon when the students arrive.
As the person in charge of the class blog, I can direct you to some
    in progress shots
views from Kim Beck's classroom visit
    and
    our finished mural!

  • Watercolor Workshop at the Baldwin School

I was asked, following my portrait painting demo during the "PAFA at Baldwin" exhibit, to lead a watercolor workshop at the Upper School Arts Day for the students at this prestigious Bryn Mawr school. We worked on still lifes and some experimental techniques. Watercolor seems both the ubiquitous and the forgotten paint medium.

  • Wish You Were There

Philadelphia artists thinking about the natural world...
    WORK BY:
Rebecca Miller, Samantha Dylan Mitchell, Matthew Colaizzo, Sarah Finestone,
Michael Branca, Paul Richardson, Andrew Defrance, Kaitlin Kylie Pomerantz
    GREEN LINE CAFE
    3649 Lancaster Ave.
    AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2011
Wish You Were There presents the work of eight Philadelphia-based artists grappling with ideas about the natural world. Featured works draw from a range of references-- from traditional landscape and still-life painting, to pop culture postcards and technicolor photographs, to scientific illustration and visual taxonomies, to more idiosyncratic, obsessive and personal visions. This grouping of work reveals the complexity of the urban dweller's relationship to real or imagined ideas of a geographical, ecological "other". Beyond mere escapist fantasy, Wish You Were There highlights the variety of ways that we experience, interpret, project ourselves onto and lose ourselves in "nature" or an amorphous, and often greener "beyond".
    OPENING RECEPTION:

Apologies for not posting until after the fact, but this past weekend (11/12-14) I participated in two large group shows:
    * Art Gala 2010 in Unionville, PA -- a show which has grown quite a bit over its approximately 35 years, and now includes almost 100 artists from the community
    * Philadelphia Art Salon on the Main Line -- a show of similar size, put together by "artist and innovator" Caryn Kunkle, who hosts a monthly salon for Philly artists

Life Magazine. The Boy Scouts of America, the distributors of this
publication, have long been a leading shaper of the masculine youth in
this country. Specifically, our interest lies behind the conditioning
of adolescent white heterosexual boys and their connection to the
natural world in which they learn."
